Where it came from
The Beast token, designated with collector number 9, was released in 2014 as part of the Magic 2015 (M15) Core Set. These tokens were produced to accompany specific cards within the set that generated Beast creature tokens, serving as a physical representation on the battlefield during gameplay. The design reflects the visual language of the M15 aesthetic, which emphasized a slightly modernized look for the core set identity during a period of transition for the game's art direction.
The artwork for this token was provided by Steve Prescott, a prolific contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Prescott’s illustration captures the creature's feral and imposing nature, adhering to the traditional fantasy archetype of a Beast while maintaining the clean, functional design requirements necessary for gameplay utility. Upon its release, the token was widely distributed in booster packs, becoming a standard inclusion for players utilizing green-aligned strategies in both casual and competitive formats.
