Swamp

Released in 1999, the Portal Three Kingdoms set was designed specifically for the Asian market, intending to introduce Magic: The Gathering to players in Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong by utilizing themes and figures from the 14th-century Chinese historical epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This specific Swamp card, marked as collector number 173, represents the aesthetic shift toward East Asian artistic influences that defined the set's identity, departing from the typical gothic or high-fantasy landscapes found in standard expansions of the era.

The artwork, executed in a clean, minimalist style that emphasizes traditional East Asian landscape painting techniques, was part of a broader effort to make the game's mechanics more accessible through simplified card text. While the set was initially met with limited availability in Western markets, its unique art direction and the inclusion of powerful, simplified cards eventually led to it becoming a highly sought-after curiosity for collectors, with the basic lands often appreciated for their distinctive, atmospheric departure from the game's core art style.
