Where it came from
Willbender was originally released as a rare card in the Legions set in 2003, but this specific iteration comes from the Commander 2014 supplemental set. The Commander series was designed by Wizards of the Coast to provide preconstructed decks tailored for the popular multiplayer Commander format, and this reprint allowed players to access the card's unique 'morph' ability, which lets a player cast the creature face-down as a 2/2 for three generic mana to create tactical ambiguity on the battlefield.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a prolific illustrator known for his dynamic and atmospheric work within the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Moeller’s design for Willbender focuses on the visual themes of manipulation and redirection, capturing the character’s ability to change the targets of spells or abilities. Upon its introduction, the card gained a dedicated following among players who prioritize reactive, control-oriented gameplay, and it remains a staple in blue Commander decks for its versatility.
