Where it came from
Willbender was originally introduced in the 2002 Magic: The Gathering set Onslaught, designed as part of the morph mechanic which allowed players to cast creatures face-down for a generic mana cost. The card was selected for inclusion in the 2014 Duel Decks Anthology: Jace vs. Chandra as part of a curated effort to reprint iconic dueling decks from the game's history, highlighting the strategic utility of morph creatures in interactive gameplay.
The card features artwork by Greg Staples, who rendered the character as a cloaked, mysterious figure manipulating magical energy. The design intent behind Willbender was to provide players with a low-cost, high-impact tool for shifting the outcome of a stack-based interaction, earning it a long-standing reputation among players as a reliable and tricky defensive staple in various formats.
