Where it came from
Willbender was originally printed in the 2002 Scourge set as part of the Morph mechanic, a clever design innovation that allowed players to cast creatures face-down as colorless 2/2s. The card was selected for the 2008 Duel Decks: Jace vs. Chandra release, a product line designed to introduce new players to the game through pre-constructed, thematically balanced decks. This specific inclusion provided a utility-focused blue creature that fit the defensive, control-oriented playstyle of the Jace deck.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who provided a dynamic illustration capturing the Morph creature’s ability to shift the trajectory of spells or abilities. Within the context of the Duel Decks series, the art and mechanics were intended to showcase the strategic depth of blue magic, emphasizing redirection and surprise. The card remains a notable example of the morph mechanic’s implementation, valued by players for its ability to turn a game around at a lower mana investment than typical control effects.
