Where it came from
Willbender was originally released as a rare in the 2002 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Onslaught. It served as a tactical cornerstone for the morph mechanic, a game design innovation that allowed players to cast face-down creatures as 2/2s for three mana, which could later be flipped over for a specific cost to trigger powerful surprise effects. The card was designed to test the limits of creature-based interaction, forcing opponents to play around hidden information during combat.
The Timeshifted version, numbered 36, was issued in 2006 as part of the Time Spiral set. This special subset featured 'colorshifted' frames and nostalgic visual callbacks to earlier sets, intended to celebrate the history of the game. The card features art by Adam Rex, whose clean, imaginative style helped define the look of the Morph creatures. Upon its re-release, it remained a popular tool in competitive and casual circles for its versatility in redirecting spells and abilities, solidifying its status as an iconic utility creature.
