Where it came from
Willbender was originally printed in the Legions set in 2003, designed as part of the morph mechanic that allowed players to play creatures face-down as colorless 2/2s. The card's design focus was on providing utility and surprise, allowing a player to redirect a spell or ability targeting one of their permanents to another legal target, which solidified its reputation as a versatile tool for tactical deception in blue-aligned control decks.
The version from the Masters 25 set, released in 2018 to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Magic: The Gathering, features the original artwork by Christopher Moeller. This reprint was included to curate a draft experience that highlighted iconic mechanics from the game's history, and it was generally well-received by players for its classic utility and the nostalgic value of its original, expressive illustration.
