Where it came from
Balance was originally released in the 1999 Urza's Destiny expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a powerful sorcery card intended to level the playing field by forcing all players to discard cards and sacrifice lands until everyone controlled the same number. Its stark, philosophical nature quickly made it a hallmark of competitive play, though its immense power led to it being heavily restricted or outright banned in most official tournament formats for decades.
The 30th Anniversary Edition printing of Balance, numbered 300, serves as a commemorative tribute to the game's history. These cards were produced in 2022 to celebrate three decades of the franchise, utilizing a distinct back design to differentiate them from tournament-legal cards. The artwork reflects the iconic aesthetic established in the late 1990s, focusing on thematic balance and symmetry that has become synonymous with the card's enduring legacy in the community.
