Where it came from
The Balance card was originally issued as part of the Pro Tour Collector Set, a specialized product released by Wizards of the Coast to commemorate the 1997 Pro Tour season. This set functioned as a non-randomized boxed collection that provided players with a curated selection of cards that were prominent in the competitive meta at the time, specifically those featured in the decks of top-tier tournament players.
The design of Balance, with its iconic illustration by Mark Poole, is a staple of early Magic: The Gathering history. Originally appearing in the Alpha set, it remains one of the most mechanically potent sorceries in the game’s history, designed to force players to discard cards and sacrifice lands and creatures until both players control an equal number of each. Because of its extreme efficiency and ability to reset the board state, it became a lightning rod for competitive debate and ultimately led to it being heavily restricted or banned in most sanctioned tournament formats.
