What it does

Where it came from
Balance was first introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to be a foundational white card that enforced parity between players. It was conceived as a way for a player behind on board state to equalize the game by forcing both players to discard cards and sacrifice lands and creatures until they reached the lowest common denominator, a reflection of white's philosophical focus on structure and fairness.
