Where it came from
Balance was first introduced in the Alpha edition of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as one of the game's original powerful sorceries. It represents the concept of game-state parity, forcing all players to discard cards and sacrifice lands and creatures until everyone controls the same amount, a design meant to serve as a strategic equalizer for players who had fallen behind.
This specific printing comes from The List, a curated selection of reprints included in Set Boosters starting in 2020. By including iconic cards from throughout the game's history in modern packaging, Wizards of the Coast sought to provide players with access to older, highly sought-after staples while maintaining the card's original aesthetic and mechanical intent.
