Beast

The Beast token, numbered 19 in the 2014 Commander set, was produced by Wizards of the Coast as part of a supplemental release designed specifically for the Commander multiplayer format. These tokens were included within preconstructed decks to represent creatures summoned by specific cards, such as Garruk, Apex Predator or various green-aligned spells. The tokens were issued to provide players with a physical, thematic representation of the battlefield state, a standard practice for the Commander series to ensure clarity during complex board states.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Dave Allsop, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering known for his gritty, atmospheric style. Allsop was tasked with depicting a formidable, primal creature that embodied the raw ferocity associated with the green color identity. His design focuses on a hunched, powerful beast that emphasizes physical menace through anatomical exaggeration and textured detail, which serves the functional role of an intimidating creature presence that remains easily recognizable across the table.
