Beast

This Beast token was released as part of the Duel Decks: Anthology set in 2014, a compilation designed to reissue the first four entries in the popular Magic: The Gathering Duel Decks series. These tokens were specifically packaged to accompany the Garruk vs. Liliana deck, which first debuted in 2008 and famously pitted a green-aligned planeswalker against a black-aligned necromancer. The inclusion of these tokens served to update the physical components of the original decks for a new generation of players, maintaining the established mechanical gameplay of the series.

The artwork for this particular Beast token reflects the aggressive, primal aesthetic associated with Garruk Wildspeaker’s summoning abilities. While specific illustrator credits for individual tokens within anthologies are often categorized under the broader set’s creative direction, the visual language follows the established lore of the creature type: a hulking, imposing force intended to represent significant board presence. The design was well-received for its utilitarian clarity and its ability to provide a cohesive, thematic visual aid during complex gameplay sessions.
