Beast

The Beast token was issued in 2004 as part of the Magic Player Rewards program, an initiative by Wizards of the Coast designed to incentivize long-term engagement by rewarding active tournament players with exclusive promotional cards. As tokens are utility items used to represent creatures created by spell effects, this particular card was produced to provide a physical, branded representation for players casting cards like Beast Attack or Krosan Beast during the 2004 Standard and Extended competitive seasons.

The artwork for this token was illustrated by Kev Walker, a prominent artist whose distinct, visceral style became synonymous with the aesthetic of Magic: The Gathering during the early 2000s. Walker aimed to capture the primal, aggressive nature of the creature type through a high-contrast depiction that emphasized muscularity and ferocity. The piece was well-received by the player base for its evocative design, which offered a significant visual upgrade over the makeshift markers or generic tokens often utilized by players in tournament play at the time.
