Island

The Island card from the Unlimited Edition, released in 1993, served as a foundational element of the early Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. As one of the core basic lands required to generate blue mana, it was essential for players attempting to construct decks within the game's initial ruleset. This edition was the second printing of the game, designed to provide a more consistent experience following the rapid exhaustion of the initial Limited Edition Alpha and Beta print runs, while retaining the iconic artwork that established the game's high-fantasy visual identity.

The art for this specific Island was created by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and celebrated illustrators in the game's formative years. Rush sought to capture a serene, ethereal aesthetic through his distinct use of color and composition, which became synonymous with the 'Island' card type for a generation of players. While basic lands were the most common cards in the game, the Unlimited version is now sought after by collectors for its thick white borders and the specific print quality that distinguishes it from both the earlier black-bordered sets and subsequent releases.
