Counterspell

The Counterspell included in the Signature Spellbook: Jace series was released in 2018 as part of a curated product line dedicated to the iconic blue-aligned planeswalker Jace Beleren. This particular printing utilizes new art by Aleksi Briclot, who was tasked with reimagining one of the most recognizable and mechanically fundamental cards in the history of Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed as a thematic showcase, highlighting the character's intellectual and control-oriented gameplay identity through a selection of reprints featuring special borders and aesthetic uniformity.

Briclot's design for this card leans into the ethereal and psychic motifs associated with Jace, moving away from the more traditional interpretations of magic used in earlier versions of the card. The release was generally well-received by players and collectors, who appreciated the stylized uniformity of the Signature Spellbook treatment. By isolating a specific character's influence on the color blue, the product provided a focused look at how iconic spells can be contextualized within the broader lore of the Magic multiverse.
