Where it came from
Counterspell was released in the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering in 1993, serving as a core component of the blue color identity since the game's inception. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to provide blue players with a definitive tool for interaction, functioning as a fundamental 'permission' spell that allows a player to negate an opponent's move. Its mechanical simplicity and high utility quickly established it as a cornerstone of competitive play during the game's formative years.
The artwork for the Beta version of Counterspell was illustrated by Mark Poole. His design features a classic, ethereal aesthetic that reflects the early fantasy art style prevalent in the game's debut sets. As one of the most recognizable cards in the hobby, Counterspell has seen numerous reprints over decades of play, but the Beta iteration remains highly sought after by collectors for its role in establishing the visual and strategic language of the game.
