Counterspell

Counterspell is one of the foundational cards in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, originating in the Alpha set of 1993 as a core tool for blue-aligned players to negate opposing spells. By the time it was included as card number 67 in the 2001 Seventh Edition base set, the card had already cemented itself as an essential staple of competitive play, embodying the fundamental defensive mechanics that define the blue color identity.

The Seventh Edition printing features artwork by Donato Giancola, who was commissioned to provide a new, more painterly aesthetic for the classic design. His illustration depicts a stoic wizard actively suppressing a magical eruption, a departure from the more abstract or illustrative styles used in earlier core sets. This version is particularly noted by collectors for its transition into the modern white-bordered design era of the game, representing a key moment in the standardization of Magic's visual language.
