Counterspell

Counterspell from the Summer Magic set, colloquially known as Edgar, originated from an aborted 1994 reprint run intended to correct errors in the Revised Edition of Magic: The Gathering. Due to a series of distribution mishaps and production delays, the vast majority of this stock was intended for destruction, leaving only a tiny fraction to enter public circulation. Its rarity and the peculiar circumstances of its release make it one of the most sought-after artifacts in the history of the game.

The card features the iconic artwork of Mark Poole, who provided the illustration for the original Alpha printing. Poole’s design for Counterspell—a minimalist, evocative representation of magical negation—became a visual hallmark of the game's early identity. While the artwork itself is consistent with the initial release, the Summer Magic print run is distinguished by its unique color saturation and specific copyright dating, which have made it a definitive touchstone for collectors interested in the production history of the hobby.
