Counterspell

Summer Magic, often referred to by collectors as the Edgar set, was produced in 1994 as a corrected print run to address the significant color and text errors found in the Revised Edition of Magic: The Gathering. Despite being intended as a standard replacement release, a large portion of the stock was destroyed due to ongoing distribution issues, leaving only a limited quantity to reach the public market. This set is particularly noted for its vibrant color correction and the inclusion of unique misprints that differentiate it from previous iterations of the game.

The art for the Counterspell card, a cornerstone of blue control decks, was provided by Christopher Rush. His design for this iteration maintains the iconic, stark visual language of the early game's aesthetic, which emphasized high-contrast imagery and a minimalist approach to card layout. While the card itself functions identically to its Revised counterpart, the Summer Magic version is revered by historians of the game for its rarity and its status as a tangible record of the quality control challenges faced by Wizards of the Coast during their early expansion phase.
