Where it came from
The 2001 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a way for players to own exact, non-tournament-legal replicas of the decks used by the top players at the 2001 Magic: The Gathering World Championships. This specific version of Counterspell, part of the 'ab67' series within these decks, was chosen to replicate the control strategies prevalent in the competitive metagame of the time, allowing fans to study the specific card choices made by professional players during international competition.
The artwork for this particular printing of Counterspell features the classic illustration by Mark Poole, who provided much of the early visual identity for the game. His design sought to capture the essence of a magical negation through a minimalist and mystical aesthetic. While the card itself is an iconic staple of the game's history, this specific printing is notable for its gold-bordered back and the facsimile signature of the professional player whose deck it was sourced from, which distinguishes it from standard tournament cards.
