Where it came from
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Art Series was released in 2024 as a special crossover within the Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop series. This collection reimagines iconic Basic Land cards by integrating the distinct visual language of the TMNT franchise, merging the traditional aesthetics of the trading card game with the nostalgic pop-culture imagery of the 1980s and 1990s animated series and comic books.
Card number 36, featuring the Plains, was designed to emphasize the urban environment of New York City, serving as the setting for the Turtles' adventures. The artwork utilizes a bold, high-contrast illustrative style consistent with the aesthetic of the series, intending to evoke a sense of familiarity for longtime fans while maintaining the functionality required for gameplay within the broader Magic: The Gathering ecosystem.
