Lore

Why it matters

This rare card stands as a significant piece within the collection for its unique ability to fundamentally alter the pace of a match by preventing players from untapping their permanents. By locking down the board state, it forces opponents to carefully navigate a game environment where resources remain stagnant and every strategic decision carries increased weight.

Provenance

Where it came from

Stasis was originally released in 1993 as part of the Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield to represent the concept of magical stagnation. The artwork for the original card, created by Christopher Rush, remains one of the most iconic and recognizable images in the game's history, depicting a surreal, freezing blue landscape that perfectly encapsulates the card's mechanical function of preventing players from untapping their lands.

The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, was created as a commemorative, non-tournament-legal celebration of the game's history. It features the original Alpha-style card frame and art, serving as a high-end collector's tribute to the game's origins. While these cards were released in limited-run booster packs, the design intent was to honor the aesthetic legacy of the original 1993 release for long-time enthusiasts and players who cherish the early look of the game.
