Where it came from
Stasis was originally printed in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to represent the concept of temporal freezing. The card's iconic illustration was created by Fay Jones, who famously featured her own daughter in the artwork. The design intent was to create a game state that halted the flow of play, forcing players to adapt to a stalled environment, which remains one of the most mechanically distinct and debated effects in the game's history.
The 30th Anniversary Edition was released in 2022 to commemorate three decades of the game. These cards were produced with a distinct card back and border treatment, intended specifically as a collectible celebration rather than for standard tournament play. The inclusion of Stasis in this set pays homage to the card's enduring legacy as a quintessential 'control' element, maintaining the original artwork by Fay Jones while applying the updated holographic and finish specifications of the celebratory release.
