Stasis was originally printed in the Alpha set in 1993, but the Revised Edition release, which featured this specific iteration, brought the card to a broader player base. Created during the infancy of Magic: The Gathering, the card was designed to embody the concept of temporal paralysis, forcing players to skip their untap steps and effectively locking the game state in place. It represents the early experimental design philosophy of Richard Garfield, where cards were intended to explore abstract mechanical limitations rather than strictly balanced competitive play.

The artwork for this version was provided by the renowned Pacific Northwest artist Fay Jones. Known for her figurative and often whimsical style, Jones offered a starkly different aesthetic from the gritty fantasy tropes common in early Magic. The illustration depicts a surreal, dreamlike scene of figures floating in a blue-toned void, which perfectly captured the card's theme of suspended animation.
