Provenance

Where it came from

Stasis first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield. As one of the game's earliest blue enchantments, it was conceived to represent the magical concept of temporal stagnation, forcing players to forgo the untap step. This mechanic created a highly restrictive play environment that forced opponents to carefully manage their resources, quickly establishing the card as a foundational piece of control-oriented strategies.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by Christopher Rush, a legendary artist whose work defined the visual language of the game's early years. His depiction of the surreal, dreamlike figure trapped in a temporal bubble became iconic within the community. While the Fourth Edition printing removed the artist credit and updated the frame to the standard white-bordered aesthetic of the mid-1990s, the card remains a quintessential example of early Magic design and the experimental complexity that characterized the game's debut.
