Where it came from
Stasis was originally printed as a rare card in the 1993 Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, featuring iconic artwork by Amy Weber. The design centers on the concept of temporal paralysis, requiring the player to skip their untap step in exchange for freezing the game state, a mechanic that defined the card's reputation for creating stagnant, strategic stalemates.
The International Collectors' Edition version, released in 1993, was designed as a non-tournament-legal promotional product for the European market. These cards are distinguished by their square corners and gold-bordered backs, serving as a display-oriented print run that aimed to provide players with access to staple cards from the early sets while preserving the rarity of the original tournament-legal counterparts.
