Provenance

Where it came from

Stasis was originally printed as a blue enchantment in the 1993 Alpha set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, designed by Richard Garfield to represent a state of temporal paralysis. The Summer Magic version, internally codenamed 'Edgar', was a limited-run replacement print produced in 1994 to correct numerous errors found in the preceding Revised Edition. It was intended for distribution through standard retail channels but was largely recalled and destroyed due to printing quality issues, making survivors exceptionally scarce within the secondary market.

The artwork for this specific iteration features the iconic surrealist illustration by Christopher Rush. Rush intended to capture the feeling of static time through a blend of ethereal, dreamlike imagery that aligns with the card's mechanical function of skipping untap steps. While the card is often divisive among players due to its ability to stall game progression, it remains a cornerstone of Magic's early aesthetic identity, prized by collectors for its role as a tangible piece of the game's tumultuous early manufacturing history.
