Where it came from
Windfall was originally released as an uncommon in the 1997 Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Mike Elliott, the card was intended to provide a powerful blue hand-refill mechanic that forced all players to discard their hands and draw cards equal to the largest hand size. Its introduction quickly proved to be a dominant force in competitive play, leading to its eventual restriction and banning in several formats due to the extreme speed it added to combo-oriented decks.
The version from the Iconic Masters set, released in 2017, features updated artwork by Volkan Baga. As a retrospective set intended to showcase influential cards from the game's history, Iconic Masters included Windfall as a nod to its legacy as one of the most potent card-draw spells ever printed. Baga's illustration maintains the conceptual core of the original, visualizing the chaotic cycle of discarding and replenishing resources that defines the card's function.
