Provenance

Where it came from

Windfall was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1998. It was designed as a powerful wheel effect, forcing each player to discard their hand and draw cards equal to the greatest number of cards discarded this way. The card quickly became infamous for its ability to enable explosive strategies, eventually leading to its restriction or banning in several competitive formats throughout its history.

The version from Iconic Masters, released in 2017, features updated artwork by Scott Murphy. This set was designed as a curated collection of powerful and iconic cards from throughout the game's history, meant to provide players with accessible copies of staples. Murphy’s reimagining of the card maintains the chaotic, swirling energy of the original, serving as a functional reprint that allows players to utilize the card's potent hand-refilling mechanic in modern casual and commander settings.
