Where it came from
Windfall was originally printed in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, designed as a powerful blue sorcery that forces all players to discard their hands and draw new ones equal to the largest number discarded. This effect, often categorized as a 'wheel' effect, was intended to disrupt hand-advantage strategies and punish players who held onto large numbers of cards. Given the card's explosive potential to enable combo decks, it became a staple of the format and necessitated multiple reprints to maintain availability for players.
The version from Commander 2016 features updated card frame styling consistent with the supplemental product line, while retaining the iconic mechanics of the original card. This specific printing was included to support the social, multiplayer nature of the Commander format, where the card serves as a powerful equalizer. The artwork continues to reflect the chaotic, swirling nature of the spell, remaining a highly recognizable piece of utility magic within the game's history.
