Provenance

Where it came from

Windfall was originally released as a rare card in the 1997 Urza's Saga expansion. The card was designed as a blue sorcery that forces each player to discard their hand and draw a new hand equal to the greatest number of cards discarded, acting as a powerful tool for blue decks to disrupt opponents while refilling their own resources. It quickly gained a reputation for its high power level in multiplayer formats.

The version from Commander 2015 was reprinted with new artwork by Svetlin Velinov to fit the product's focus on multiplayer-oriented gameplay. This set was designed to introduce preconstructed decks that emphasized social play and unique mechanics, with Windfall serving as a staple inclusion due to its effectiveness at balancing the board state in a four-player game. The card remains a widely utilized component in the Commander format today.
