Windfall was originally introduced in the 1997 expansion Urza's Saga as an instant. It was designed during a period of high-powered, artifact-centric gameplay, intended to punish opponents with large hands by forcing them to discard and draw anew, a mechanic that quickly became a staple of blue-aligned deck building.
