Where it came from
Change of Heart was originally released as a staple spell card in the early Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game era, debuting in the Metal Raiders booster set in 2002. As a TCG adaptation of the original Japanese OCG release, the card represented a pivotal moment in game design where control-altering mechanics were introduced to disrupt the standard flow of competitive play, allowing a player to seize an opponent's monster for a single turn.
The card's iconic illustration depicts a stylized, demonic heart being restrained by chains, a visual choice that mirrored the high-fantasy aesthetic common to early Konami card designs. Designed to reward tactical foresight, the card quickly became a centerpiece of early competitive decks due to its ability to turn an opponent's strongest asset against them, leading to its long-term status as a restricted or banned card in various tournament formats.
