Where it came from
Force of Will was originally printed in the 1996 Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. It was designed as a zero-mana counterspell with an additional cost of paying one life and exiling a blue card, a mechanic that fundamentally shifted the game's competitive landscape by providing a safety valve against aggressive early-game strategies. The artwork for the original card was illustrated by Terese Nielsen, whose depiction of a glowing, ethereal figure has become one of the most iconic images in the trading card game's history.
The 2023 Legacy Championship version, designated with collector number 2023EU, serves as a commemorative printing awarded to participants or winners within the professional play circuit. These versions often utilize updated frames or premium foiling treatments, reflecting the card's status as a staple of the Legacy format. The design intent for these specialty issues is to honor the card's enduring legacy while offering a prestigious collectible for tournament veterans who have utilized the card as a cornerstone of blue-based control decks for decades.
