Provenance

Where it came from

Originally released in the 1996 Alliances set, Force of Will was designed by Terese Nielsen as a centerpiece of blue control strategies. Its function allows players to cast the spell for free by exiling a blue card, providing a critical safety net that fundamentally altered the landscape of the Magic: The Gathering competitive metagame. The card's aesthetic, characterized by a haunting, ethereal depiction of a wizard channeling energy, became one of the most iconic images in the game's history.

The Double Masters edition, released in 2020, features an updated borderless illustration by Seb McKinnon. This version was created to celebrate the history of the game's most powerful cards by offering players a fresh, stylized interpretation of classic mechanics. While the original artwork remains a touchstone for collectors, the Double Masters printing was widely praised for its atmospheric shift, highlighting the card's status as a quintessential staple of eternal formats like Legacy and Vintage.
