Where it came from
Force of Will was originally introduced in the 1996 Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. It was designed to fundamentally change the competitive landscape by providing a powerful, zero-mana counterspell that could be cast by exiling a blue card from one's hand, thereby allowing players to interact with opponents even while tapped out. The card quickly became a pillar of Eternal formats like Legacy and Vintage, serving as a critical safety valve against degenerate combo decks.
The version from the Eternal Masters set, released in 2016, features iconic artwork by Terese Nielsen. This printing was highly anticipated as it updated the card's visual aesthetic while maintaining its functional role as a cornerstone of high-level play. The Eternal Masters set was designed specifically to provide players with access to rare and influential cards from the game's history, and this particular rendition remains a favored version among players who appreciate the stylistic evolution of classic Magic cards.
