Karplusan Forest

Karplusan Forest was originally introduced in the Ice Age expansion in 1995, designed to provide players with a versatile dual-land option capable of producing either red or green mana at the cost of one life. This mechanic represented the harsh, mountainous environment of the Karplusan region in the Magic: The Gathering lore, balancing utility with a tangible drawback that forced players to weigh resource efficiency against their remaining health.

For the Ninth Edition printing in 2005, the artwork was commissioned from the celebrated landscape illustrator John Avon. Avon, known for his sweeping, atmospheric depictions of natural environments, created a version that emphasized the jagged, crystalline features of the forest. The card was well-received by the player base, solidifying its place as a staple for aggressive red-green deck archetypes throughout the mid-2000s.
