Where it came from
Karplusan Forest first appeared in the Ice Age expansion released in 1995, representing a harsh, mountainous region of the continent of Terisiare. The card was designed as a dual land, a foundational mechanical archetype in Magic: The Gathering that allows players to generate two different colors of mana at the cost of a small amount of life, reflecting the dangerous nature of the terrain depicted in the game's lore.
The Ninth Edition printing, released in 2005, updated the card's visual identity with a modern frame and new artwork by illustrator John Avon. Avon, a staple of the game's aesthetic, aimed to capture the rugged, untamed essence of the forest through sweeping vistas and dramatic lighting. This version was well-received by players for its improved readability and the classic, high-quality landscape style that defined the era of core set expansions.
