Karplusan Forest

Karplusan Forest was originally introduced in the 1995 Ice Age set, designed as a 'pain land' that provides flexibility by offering two colors of mana at the cost of one life. This specific version originates from the 2002 World Championship Decks, a product line created by Wizards of the Coast to replicate the exact 75-card decks used by top-performing players at the Magic: The Gathering World Championships. These cards are distinguished by gold-bordered backs and the signatures of the professional players printed on the front, serving as both a competitive teaching tool and a commemorative artifact of tournament history.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Brian Snodgrass, whose rendering depicts the rugged, untamed wilderness of the Karplusan region in Dominaria. The design reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic prevalent in mid-90s Magic, emphasizing the harsh, mana-rich environment through dramatic lighting and organic textures. Within the 2002 World Championship product, this card was included to provide the essential mana base for the aggressive red-green deck archetypes that dominated the tournament meta at the time, bridging the gap between historical set design and professional play.
