Where it came from
Karplusan Forest was originally introduced in the Ice Age expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1995, designed to provide players with flexible land sources that could tap for one of two colors at the cost of one life. As part of the Pro Tour Collector Set, this specific version was released in 1997 to commemorate the decklists used by top-tier competitors at early Pro Tour events. These cards are distinct from standard releases due to gold-bordered backs and silver-stamped signatures, serving as a snapshot of the competitive landscape during the game's formative years.
The card was illustrated by Melissa A. Benson, a prominent artist during the game's early era known for her evocative and somewhat surreal depictions of fantasy landscapes. Her work on the Pain Lands, including Karplusan Forest, focused on capturing the rugged, inhospitable nature of the fictional location while maintaining clarity for gameplay mechanics. This card remains a staple for collectors interested in the evolution of tournament-legal card designs and the early history of competitive play.
