Karplusan Forest

Karplusan Forest originated in the Ice Age expansion, released in 1995, representing the rugged, volatile landscape of Dominaria. This specific version was issued as part of the 1997 Pro Tour Collector Set, a curated collection designed to commemorate the decks utilized by top players during the high-stakes competitive circuit of that era. By including these cards in a boxed set, Wizards of the Coast allowed enthusiasts to own the same tools wielded by professional competitors, bridging the gap between casual play and the burgeoning tournament scene.

The card was illustrated by Melissa A. Benson, whose work during Magic’s formative years defined the aesthetic of early land cards. Her design for the Karplusan Forest utilizes a stark, naturalistic palette to evoke the harsh, mountainous terrain of the region. As a 'pain land' that provides dual-color mana at the cost of life, the design was critically lauded for its mechanical balance and high-stakes utility. It remains a foundational piece of Magic history, valued for its impact on early competitive deck-building strategies.
