Where it came from
The Treasure token, numbered 12 in the Ravnica Allegiance token set, was released in January 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ravnica Allegiance. These tokens were designed to represent the Treasure artifact mechanic, which allows players to sacrifice the token to add one mana of any color to their mana pool. Like many tokens in this era of the game, it was included in randomized booster packs to facilitate gameplay rather than being a core card in a deck’s composition.
The art for this token was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to reflect the aesthetic of Ravnica, a plane defined by its sprawling, gothic, and guild-dominated cityscape. The visual direction aimed to capture the allure of wealth within this setting, emphasizing the glittering, gold-filled aesthetic typical of the game's depiction of riches. As a utilitarian game piece, its reception was purely functional, valued by players for its role in tracking game states during matches involving cards like Smothering Tithe or Pitiless Plunderer.
