Where it came from
The Treasure token from the Core Set 2020 expansion was released by Wizards of the Coast in July 2019. It was designed to serve as a physical representation of an artifact created by various cards within the set, such as 'Prosperous Pirates' or 'Captain Lannery Storm'. These tokens function as game pieces that players sacrifice to generate one mana of any color, a mechanic that became a staple of modern gameplay design to provide players with flexible resource management.
The artwork for this specific token was illustrated by Titus Lunter, who was tasked with visualizing the classic high-fantasy aesthetic of a hoard of gold. The design emphasizes a glowing, opulent pile of riches, intended to provide immediate visual clarity on the battlefield. Upon its release, the token was well-received by the Magic: The Gathering community for its clean, readable iconography, which has since become a standard template for subsequent token designs in the game's evolving ecosystem.
