Where it came from
The Treasure token from the Strixhaven: School of Mages set was released in April 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering card game. Within the narrative of the Strixhaven set, tokens serve as physical representations of resources or creatures created by various spells, with the Treasure card specifically representing a hoard of magical wealth that can be sacrificed for mana. The design team created this specific token to align with the scholarly, magical aesthetic of the Strixhaven university setting.
The visual identity of this token was crafted to reflect the thematic elegance of Strixhaven's five colleges, utilizing a rich, gilded color palette and ornate iconography that distinguishes it from Treasure tokens in other expansions. It was illustrated to convey the allure of ancient magical artifacts, fitting seamlessly into the set's broader design goal of evoking a high-fantasy campus environment. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its thematic cohesion and clear utility during gameplay sessions.
