Where it came from
Duress was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, designed to provide black-aligned decks with a tactical tool to disrupt an opponent's hand. Its function—forcing a player to reveal their hand and discard a non-creature, non-land card—established it as a quintessential discard spell that has been reprinted numerous times across Magic: The Gathering's history due to its balanced efficiency.
The Core Set 2021 iteration of Duress features artwork by Daarken, who leaned into the dark, oppressive aesthetic associated with the card's function. By depicting a shadowed figure exerting mental or magical control, the design captures the essence of stripping an opponent of their resources, a visual style that has remained consistent with the card's mechanical identity throughout its many printings.
