Where it came from
Duress was originally released in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, but this specific version originates from the 1999 World Championship Decks. These decks were produced as a celebration of the professional Magic: The Gathering circuit, allowing fans to purchase exact card-for-card replicas of the decks used by the top players during the 1999 World Championship tournament in Tokyo.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, whose evocative style became a staple of the era. The card itself, a black sorcery that forces an opponent to reveal their hand and discard a non-creature, non-land card, was a tactical mainstay in competitive play. Because these decks were designed as educational and commemorative souvenirs, the cards feature a distinct gold-bordered back, distinguishing them from standard tournament-legal cards.
