Where it came from
Duress was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, designed to provide black decks with a strategic tool for hand disruption. The card quickly became a staple in competitive Magic: The Gathering, favored for its efficiency in stripping key spells from an opponent's hand before they could be cast. Its inclusion in the 2001 World Championship Decks reflects its status as a foundational element of tournament-level play during that era, specifically within the sideboards of successful deck archetypes.
The 2001 World Championship Decks were curated sets designed to replicate the exact card lists used by the top eight finalists at the world tournament in Toronto. These products were produced to give players an accessible way to experience and study high-level competitive strategies. The card features original artwork by rk post, whose gothic, minimalist aesthetic captures the oppressive theme of the spell. The version found in these decks is identified by a unique gold-border and the player's signature printed on the card face, distinguishing it as a commemorative piece of professional gaming history.
