Where it came from
Duress was originally released in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, designed by Mark Rosewater and Mike Elliott to provide black decks with a balanced way to strip key spells from an opponent's hand. Its mechanical simplicity—revealing an opponent's hand and discarding a noncreature, nonland card—made it a perennial staple in competitive play, serving as a fundamental tool for disruption and information gathering.
The 2005 Friday Night Magic version features new artwork by Paolo Parente, who reimagined the card's theme of psychological pressure with his distinctively dramatic and shadowy style. As a promotional release distributed through local game store tournaments, this version was created to reward active community members and competitive players, cementing its status as an iconic piece of organized play history.
