Where it came from
Duress was originally released in 1998 as part of the Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Created as a staple black discard spell, it was designed to provide players with a cost-effective way to peek at an opponent's hand and strip away non-creature threats. Over the decades, it has become a quintessential tool in competitive play, favored for its ability to clear the path for key strategies while gathering vital information about the opponent's game plan.
The Strixhaven Mystical Archive version, featuring collector number 29, was introduced in 2021 as part of a special subset of cards honoring iconic spells from the game's history. This specific iteration employs a distinct Japanese-inspired art style, reimagining the classic effect through the lens of the elite Strixhaven University setting. The art was executed to capture the refined, scholarly, yet sinister aesthetic of the school’s black-aligned college, Witherbloom, and was received by the community as a highly collectible and visually striking tribute to the original card's long-standing impact.
