Where it came from
Duress was originally released in the Urza's Saga set in 1998, designed by Mark Rosewater as a black sorcery that forces an opponent to discard a noncreature, nonland card. It emerged during a period of Magic: The Gathering history defined by high-power card design, quickly becoming a staple for competitive play due to its efficiency in disrupting control strategies and gathering information about an opponent's hand.
