Where it came from
Duress was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga set in 1998, designed to provide black-aligned players with a tool for hand disruption. By the time it was reprinted in the Magic 2014 core set, it had already established itself as a staple of competitive play, valued for its efficiency and the strategic advantage of stripping a key spell from an opponent's hand before they could cast it.
The Magic 2014 printing features artwork by Nic Klein, who updated the visual identity of the card with a modern aesthetic that captures the dark, psychological nature of the effect. This version was well-received by the player base for its clean, readable layout and the evocative depiction of magical coercion, remaining a highly functional utility card in both draft and constructed formats.
