Provenance

Where it came from

Duress was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, designed by Mark Rosewater as a black sorcery intended to provide players with information and disruption by revealing an opponent's hand and discarding a non-creature, non-land card. The artwork for this specific version, featured in the 2001 World Championship Decks, is the original illustration by Christopher Rush, which depicts a haunting, skeletal figure reaching out to manipulate the mind of its victim, perfectly capturing the card's theme of forced psychological vulnerability.

The 2001 World Championship Decks were a unique product line released by Wizards of the Coast to commemorate the top decks from the previous year's World Championship. These decks were non-tournament legal, identifiable by their gold-bordered edges and the facsimile signature of the player who used the deck in the tournament. This iteration of Duress was included in the deck piloted by Tomi Walamies, serving as a staple tool for competitive players to dismantle opposing strategies during the tournament's high-stakes environment.
